Generic Albenza - is an anthelminthic drug of a wide spectrum of action. It is active against pathogenic protozoa, larvae, eggs and adult forms. It affects the intestinal and tissue forms of parasites. It is used for nematodes: ascariasis, enterobiosis, ankylostomiasis, non-carotidosis, trichinosis, teniosis, opisthorchiasis, clonorchiasis; Strogyloidoses; Neurocysticercosis caused by the larval form of pork tapeworm (Taenia solium); Echinococcosis of the liver, lungs, peritoneum caused by the larval form of the canine tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus); Giardiasis; Toxocaroses; Cutaneous migratory larvae (Cutaneous Larva Migrans).

What is this medicine?

ALBENDAZOLE is an antiparasitic. It is used to treat infections of tapeworms or other parasites.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • anemia
  • biliary tract blockage
  • immune system problems
  • liver disease
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to albendazole, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Take this medicine with food. You can crush or chew this medicine. Take all of your medicine as directed even if you think your are better. Do not skip doses or stop your medicine early.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. While this drug may be prescribed for children as young as 2 years of age for selected conditions, precautions do apply.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What may interact with this medicine?

  • cimetidine
  • dexamethasone
  • praziquantel
  • theophylline

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Visit your doctor or health care professional as directed. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if you get new symptoms.You will need to have blood work done every 2 weeks while you are taking this medicine.

Do not get pregnant while taking this drug and for 1 month after your treatment. Talk to your doctor about effective birth control methods. Tell your doctor if you think you may be pregnant.

You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this medicine affects you. Do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. This reduces the risk of dizzy or fainting spells.

What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • changes in vision
  • diarrhea
  • difficulty breathing
  • fast, irregular heartbeat
  • fever, chills, sore throat
  • pain, difficulty passing urine
  • redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including the inside the mouth
  • seizures
  • unusual aches, pains
  • unusual bleeding, bruising
  • unusually weak or tired
  • yellowing of eyes, skin

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • dizziness
  • hair loss
  • headache
  • nausea, vomiting
  • stomach pain

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
